Why study IT at the University of Sydney?
Sydney University IT Society
The Sydney University Information Technologies Society (SUITS) is a society for all students interested in IT. SUITS is an extremely active society, providing many activities and services for our members, such as running social events, conducting seminars, connecting companies with students, and liaising between staff and students.
Everyone is welcome at our events, and the events are a fun way to get to know your fellow students, who may be from other disciplines or at different stages of study. Become active in university life outside the classroom: SUITS has run programming competition training, LAN gaming nights, BBQ lunches, topical seminars, a four day creative camp and more.
However, SUITS isn’t all just about fun. We provide valuable IT resources for students, such as tutorials and guides, on topics such as programming, using software tools and *NIX. We also conduct an online forum where you can discuss the hot topics of the day with other SUITS members. Every year a group of students are elected to lead the society, providing a great opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills.
So, if you are an IT student, or you are just interested in IT, or maybe you just think what you have read sounds like fun, come and join SUITS. It’s free!

Recent SUITS Events
SUITS runs events on a regular basis throughout the semester. Come along and have fun, meet new people and make new friends. All students are welcome and most of our events also have either free, or discounted food for access card holders. For full details of what we’ve been up to check out our website, or read on for a few of our most recent activities.
- Algorithms and Problem Solving
Once a week we meet to discuss and solve problems. Also, every second week we divide into teams and practise competing. The event has two main aims, first, to have fun trying to solve interesting problems and doing other programming related activities, and second, to train for the Regional ACM Programming Competition. - LAN Gaming Nights
Every semester SUITS holds several evenings of multiplayer games in the School of IT building, with lots of fun and food. Once a semester we expand the event to include another society, Sutekh, who, as well as bringing more people, supply a variety of board games. - Camp
During the mid-year break SUITS ran a four day camp. Participants formed teams of 2-3 people and worked on a team project of their own choosing. In between project work we also visited three companies in Sydney and engaged in a variety of entertaining night activities.
The University of Sydney IT Alumni Association (USITAA)
The University of Sydney IT Alumni Association (USITAA) was formed in 2008.
The School of IT (formerly the Basser Department of Computer Science) at the University of Sydney was established in 1958, the first computer science department at a university in Australia. In the past fifty years the School has helped advance IT in Australia through research and education, with over 4,000 students graduating from faculties across the University having studied IT.
USITAA was established to develop relationships between graduates and the School of Information Technologies, and to help alumni stay in touch with the University, and with each other.
All graduates and staff of the School of Information Technologies are members of USITAA. Current students are associate members.
USITAA works with the School on a number of initiatives and activities for alumni, and in the future hopes to work closely with SUITS to help build networks between alumni and current students.
Some of our activities include:
- SoIT’s News - a quarterly newsletter for alumni and students.
- Seminars.
- Annual Graduation Dinner and End Of Year Functions for staff, students and alumni.
- University outreach activities such as Sydney Uni Live.
Future plans for the association include mentoring programs and reunions.
